Health and Safety Management Systems: The Basics

This course introduces you to the characteristics of effective health and safety management systems. These systems are required for the proactive management of health and safety concerns throughout an organization. They ensure that all employees have clearly defined accountabilities for health and safety, resulting in the prevention of injuries and loss. This course is for beginning and practising health and safety officers, coordinators, professionals, trainers and administrators to gain knowledge of the fundamental principles used to manage health and safety issues in the workplace.

Course Details

By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

  • Explain the historical perspectives of management in this field
  • Explain the current evolution of H&S systems
  • Explain the fundamentals of leading
  • Explain the causes and effects of loss
  • Define the elements necessary to build an effective OH&S management system, and apply hazard identification, assessment, and control concepts to mitigate loss
  • Demonstrate how various accident theories influence development of H&S management systems
  • Demonstrate basic problem solving procedures
  • Explain the importance of typical management concerns such as the legal, moral, and financial motivators effecting the management of H&S
  • Outline the impact that an effective health and safety management system can have on an organization
  • Understand and apply effective communication skills
  • Explain the roles of OH&S professionals and their relationships with others

Notes

It is strongly recommended that students registered in the Occupational Health and Safety Fundamentals Certificate complete this course before enrolling in other courses in the program. For non-certificate students, some previous workplace experience is recommended.
